A Productive Visit to a Warehouse
Recently, we took a field trip to one of our client’s warehouses in Doncaster which was a productive visit to a warehouse!. What we found there was eye-opening and inspiring – lots of repairable equipment, and a dedicated team committed to extending the life of electronic devices.
The highlight of our visit? Bringing back 52 PCBs (printed circuit boards) that were primed for repair rather than the scrap heap! This experience has fuelled our commitment to sustainability and provided an invaluable insight into how we can add value by identifying, and reviving components that still have a lot to give!
A Look Inside the Repair Warehouse: Breathing New Life into Electronics
So, what does ‘A Productive Visit to a Warehouse’ mean?
Walking into the warehouse, we saw a mix of lightly damaged, obsolete, and heavily used electronic equipment that could easily have been discarded. Instead, these items were waiting in the repair queue, with the goal of being refurbished and redeployed. We connected with the on-site maintenance team, who walked us through their processes, identified key repair priorities, and discussed the most frequent issues they encountered with various devices.
Some were unsure whether they could ever be repaired! We of course, would love to prove them wrong! Greasley Electronics are always up for a challenge!
Many of the PCBs still had significant potential. Rather than ending up as e-waste, these PCBs could be repaired and reintegrated into their original devices or repurposed for other applications. So, we brought them back with us!
The Value We Identified: Key Takeaways from the Visit
Our visit provided crucial insights and underscored the benefits of repairing and reusing components:
- Cost Savings: By repairing the PCBs instead of purchasing new ones, the company saved on replacement costs and also reduced lead times for essential devices. This directly impacts operational budgets and efficiency.
- Reduced E-Waste: Each PCB we salvaged is one less item in the landfill. Given the harmful effects of electronic waste on the environment, reclaiming these boards is a direct contribution to sustainability.
- Enhanced Knowledge Sharing: Working alongside Connor, Ryan and the on-site maintenance team gave us a chance to exchange ideas and learn about common failure points in PCBs. This knowledge is invaluable for product design improvements that can reduce future repair needs.
Our Approach to Identifying Reusable PCBs
Bringing back 52 PCBs from the field wasn’t a random discovery – it involved a focused assessment approach:
- Visual and Functional Inspections: Working with the team, we will examine the boards for physical and electrical damage, looking for common issues like burnt components, dislodged connections, and short circuits. Many of these issues could be easily addressed, making the PCBs suitable for repair.
- Component Testing: We will perform initial testing at Greasley’s to determine if core components were intact and reusable. By prioritising PCBs with minor repair needs, we ensured a high likelihood of successful refurbishment.
Turning Our Findings into Long-Term Benefits
The potential of this visit goes far beyond the immediate cost savings and reduced e-waste. Here’s how we plan to leverage our findings:
- Supporting a Circular Economy: By salvaging PCBs and focusing on repairability, we’re helping to close the loop on electronic components, extending their useful lives and reducing dependency on new resources.
- Building Stronger Client Partnerships: This visit showed our clients our commitment to helping them achieve their sustainability and efficiency goals. By proactively identifying repair opportunities, we reinforce trust and demonstrate our dedication to long-term value.
What’s Next: A Plan for Future Site Visits
We’re already planning future visits to similar maintenance facilities to continue identifying salvageable items. We want to:
- Increase Collaboration with Maintenance Teams: Building even stronger ties with on-site teams will enhance information sharing, allowing us to understand and anticipate repair needs.
- Keep the communication channels open for them to ask us questions about common failures and ensure a quick turnaround where necessary. Relationship building is key with maintenance departments.
Our visit to the repair warehouse and the decision to bring back PCBs for refurbishment is just the beginning. It’s an example of how we, as an electronics company, can make a tangible difference by shifting from a replacement mindset to a repair-first approach. Not only will we extend the life of valuable components, but we will also and save costs for our clients.
At the end of the day, every PCB we repair is another step toward a more sustainable and efficient future in electronics.
