Restoring a Water-Damaged BCM
Modern vehicles rely heavily on electronic control units, and when one of these fails, it can cause a wide range of confusing and inconsistent faults. Recently, we had a Renault Megane Body Control Module (BCM) come in exhibiting erratic electrical behaviour – a classic symptom of underlying printed circuit board damage.
The Problem
The BCM had been exposed to water, which is one of the most damaging conditions for automotive electronics. Water contamination often leads to corrosion, broken connections, and unpredictable electrical performance.
Upon initial inspection, the damage was immediately apparent.
Why?
- A completely missing, heavily corroded pin
- Multiple pins that were weakened and close to failure
- Four PCB tracks that were corroded and broken
This level of damage would typically lead many to consider replacement, but with the right expertise, repair is often a viable and cost-effective solution.
Our Diagnostic Process
We began with a structured diagnostic approach to fully understand the extent of the issue:
- Visual inspection to identify obvious signs of damage
- Multimeter testing to check for short circuits and abnormal readings
- Fault confirmation: severe water damage beneath the main connectors
This combination of visual and electrical testing allowed us to pinpoint both visible and hidden faults within the module.
The Repair Process
Once the faults were confirmed, we carried out a detailed and precise repair:
- Carefully extracted both connectors from the circuit board
- Thoroughly cleaned the PCB using a fast-drying solvent to remove corrosion and contamination
- Replaced damaged and missing pins to restore proper connectivity
- Repaired four broken PCB tracks by manually reconstructing them with fine wire
- The wire was routed from the top side of the board to reconnect circuits on the underside
- Reinstalled and soldered the connectors back into place
- Completed a final clean to remove all flux residue and ensure a professional finish
The Result
Following repair and testing, the BCM was fully restored and functioning as intended. The erratic electrical issues were eliminated, and the unit performed reliably once back in the vehicle!
